ISS SSTV Lunar Exploration Event and Changing Direction..
The ISS SSTV Lunar Exploration event is underway, and I'm already up to a couple of awards. None of my pictures have been spectacular, but still, it is what it is.
Changing Directions:
A while ago I moved from a Ryzen 5 1600 based PC down to an Intel NUC running a 4 core, single threaded Core i5 (down from a 6 core multi threaded CPU). Good power savings, but frustrating performance.
Simply - I went from never being CPU constrained to frequently CPU constrained. I never thought that would be possible, especially when the bulk of my work is done within a web browser. Alas, I'm over it.
The Ryzen 5 1600 moved into my media server - basically a standalone server with a stack of big disks, replacing some 60 odd hard disks I had running (and keeping my power bills ridiculous). That box does the bulk of my heavy lifting. Graphics processing for media, the whole bit.
I did buy a different motherboard for it - chasing down an obscure problem causing CPU lockups that I could find little relevant information on, but continued with the new board (it turns out it was an obscure power management setting that I've since worked around). I kept the original board, and the power supply.
Today I decided as an early birthday present to myself, to order a used Ryzen 5 2600 CPU, some RAM and a basic video card so I can resurrect my PC. I'll just need to start learning to deal with having a machine that goes to sleep I think.
I'm planning too on moving all PCs out of the room and into the server rack (once I replace my half height with a full height that I'm yet to obtain.. but working on it). All of the HDMI and USB can be passed through wall plates, simplifying my desk and relieving me of a significant chunk of of cabling behind my desk.
At some stage I'll order the wall plates and jacks that I need to finish that off just nicely. A few more bills need paying before I spend any more money.
